DNR opens ATV trails for holiday weekend

All-terrain vehicle riders who normally operate their machines on private property can ride state trails this weekend without having to buy a permit. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is opening its 3,400 miles of ATV trails to Minnesotans and riders from neighboring states.

"They'll find some very technical trails which require winding through some wooded areas, they'll find some wide-open flat routes that cross really unique Minnesota landscapes," said Mary Straka with the DNR's division of parks and trails. "They'll find some great little communities along the trails that have some fun places to stop, some great picnic areas, scenic overlooks."

Minnesotans usually have to pay about $40 for a three-year pass to ride on public trails, while out-of-staters pay $21 per year.
