New Mexico judge upholds same-sex marriage ruling

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) -- A judge has upheld a ruling that a northern New Mexico county must begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

District Court Judge Sheri Raphaelson upheld the decision Wednesday and told the Los Alamos County clerk that she is required to issue marriage licenses to any two people.

Los Alamos County Clerk Sharon Stover said Tuesday that she would not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and went to court to defend her decision.

Six other county clerks in the state are issuing marriage licenses to gay couples, either out of their own accord or because of a judge's ruling.

Janet Newton and Maria Thibodeau, who applied for a marriage license last week in Los Alamos County and were denied, were in the courtroom to hear Raphaelson's ruling.
