Firefighters appear to have the upper hand as a large blaze burns in downtown Winona.  Fire crews have largely stopped the spread of the fire that began about 2 a.m. Friday and has burned several buildings.  MPR's Phil Picardi spoke with Jerome Christianson, deputy editor of the Winona Daily News, while he was standing less than a block from the fire.

At least four fire departments are at the scene. Many downtown streets are closed, and witnesses on the scene describe choking smoke as far as six blocks away at the height of the fire. Residents of nearby buildings have been evacuated.
