ELY, Minn. (AP) -- A new trail center is now open at Bear Head Lake State Park near Ely.
Bear Head Lake State Park was voted America's Favorite Park in 2010 in an online contest sponsored by Coca-Cola. The $100,000 prize provided seed money for additional state and federal funding.
Courtland Nelson of the Parks and Trails Division and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the new center represents a commitment to sustainable building and operating practices. The energy-efficient building is made from sustainable forest products with high-efficiency windows and a heat recovery system. The surrounding landscaping includes native plantings for erosion control and storm water management, designed to complement the natural setting of the park.
The trail center will be open year-round to provide a warming shelter for winter users.
