It wasn't the martial arts action that Twin Cities arts writer Stephanie Xenos found most interesting about Theater Mu's "Kung Fu Zombies Vs. Cannibals." It was the journey of the characters, and the exposure to Buddhism. The play follows a young, fierce, Lao-American woman who is taking her parents ashes back to their native Laos. Through Oct. 27 at the Southern Theater.

Minneapolis painter Mary Bergherr is looking forward to being enveloped by the work of four prominent local landscape painters. It showcases the paintings of Teresa Cox, Ellen Thompson, Melissa Loop and Donna Bruni.

Minnesota Opera Communications Manager Daniel Zillmann says the 45th season opening concert by VocalEssence shouldn't be overlooked. It features the Minnesota premiere of "There Was a Child," a moving work by one of Daniel's favorite composers, Jonathan Dove. It's a collaborative performance by the VocalEssence Chorus and Ensemble Singers, The St. Olaf Choir, The Northfield Youth Choir, and a 50-musician orchestra. Sunday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m., at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.
