Man found dead in St. Paul apartment fire

One man died in a small fire at an apartment building Tuesday afternoon in St. Paul's North End.

St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said the fire on the 1600 block of North Hamline Ave. was confined to the kitchen of one apartment. When fire crews arrived smoke and flames were visible from a second story window.

Zaccard said firefighters extinguished the relatively small blaze in less than five minutes, but found one adult male dead inside.

The building has three stories and 11 units.

Zaccard said the other apartments in the building "were not affected" and residents were free to return to them.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner will release the victim's identity and cause of death.
