Almost there.

Even though the Twin Cities second light rail transit line isn't scheduled to open until next year, test trains have already been doing practice runs into downtown St. Paul. Workers are running the Green Line trains in part to make sure they're adequately powered.

At the beginning of next year, an operations and maintenance facility in the Lowertown district will start welcoming the first of about 100 new workers. Light rail vehicles will be cleaned, maintained and stored overnight in the building.

The nearly billion-dollar Central Corridor project will connect to the Hiawatha line in Minneapolis, but the opening date is still in question. The Metropolitan Council has said only that the line will begin service in time for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Target Field in July.

The official opening date will be announced Jan. 22nd.
