Kerri's book Pick of the Week, "City of Women," is a novel set in Germany during the World War II. It follows the lives of the women left behind as the men fight on the front.
From Cleveland Plain Dealer:
"The story focuses on Sigrid Schroder, to all appearances an ordinary housewife, who becomes caught up in smuggling Jews out of the country. She finds herself tangled in a world of deception and horrifying choices, in which loyalties are flexible and survival is elusive.
Gillham's writing is often stunning: "Looking into her eyes," writes Gillham of a once-prominent matron, now reduced to pariah, "is like staring through the windows of a bombed-out building."
