Mpls. ice rinks will remain open

The cold weather is allowing Minneapolis to keep its outdoor skating rinks open next week.

The City's Park and Recreation Board says ice conditions are still great, so it has put off Monday's scheduled rink closings.

More than 20 outdoor rink locations will remain open a bit longer, weather permitting, said Al Bangoura, director of Recreation Centers and Programs.

"Maintenance will continually monitor the ice, apply water when needed. And again, with the temperatures that will go up a little bit, once we get to 30s and 40s, it's a little bit of a challenge. But we're hoping we can keep them up for another week or so," he said.

After that, Bangoura said operations staff will need to begin removing rink boards and other equipment to keep on their maintenance schedule.

The Park Board operates an ice rink hotline with updated skating conditions. The number is 612 313-7708. Rink information can also be found on the park board website.
