Ex-sheriff's deputy pleads guilty to sexual misconduct with boys

A former Mille Lacs County sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty Friday to criminal sexual misconduct with five boys. He committed most of the abuse at a summer camp where he served as a counselor last summer.

In the plea deal, Aaron Joseph Heuer, 30, of Isle, Minn., admitted to authorities that he inappropriately touched five boys between 8 and 11 years old. He agreed to a sentence of 396 months in prison.

Investigators said four of the incidents occurred in June 2013 when Heuer volunteered as a fishing guide at Lutheran Island Camp in Henning, Minn. He was charged in July.

Otter Tail Assistant County Attorney Michelle Eldien said another boy later came forward.

"At this point, I think they're all working with counselors and getting help, and there's a number of people in the court system who work with that," Eldien said. "It will be up to the families to decide what's best for them."

Heuer will be sentenced May 8 in Otter Tail County District Court.
