Volunteers clean up St. Paul

The St. Paul Department of Parks and Recreation is organizing what will be the city's first volunteer-based cleanup effort it two years.

Last year city officials canceled the event because of snow.

Ryanna Jackson is coordinating Saturday's cleanup and said there will be plenty of work for the more than 1,000 volunteers city officials hope will show up.

"We've been driving around and we see a lot of trash. The snow just finally officially melted off a lot of areas so that a lot of the trash is trying to show its face more than ever," Jackson said.

Two years ago the volunteers collected about 6,000 pounds of trash -- everything from cigarette butts to old tires, she said.

The city of Minneapolis holds its annual cleanup in two weeks.
