KARE 11 reporter Karla Hult on the latest in the Byron Smith trial

It's been a dramatic week in a Little Falls courtroom, where 65-year-old Byron Smith is on trial. Smith is charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the deaths of 17-year-old Nick Brady and 18-year-old Haile Kifer.

He claims he shot the cousins in self defense, after they broke into his home on Thanksgiving Day, 2012. The murders rocked the small central Minnesota town and stirred debate about how far a person can go in defending their home.

Karla Hult is covering the trial for MPR News partner KARE 11 and was in the courtroom today.
