The bus was operated by the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale district and was part of the district's fleet.

The driver was between routes when he smelled smoke and pulled over on I-94 near the Century Avenue exit, district spokesperson Jennifer McNeil said.

McNeil said the driver reported the fire started in the engine compartment.

The bus driver was not injured.

The exit ramp to Century Avenue from I-94 eastbound was closed for several hours, MnDOT said.
