4-year-old falls from second-story window in Waconia

A 4-year-old boy fell from a house second-story window onto a concrete patio Sunday in Waconia, according to the Carver County Sheriff's Office.

The boy, Quinn Ruhl Larson, was taken to Ridgeview Hospital and stabilized, then taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition.

A neighbor outside heard the fall and found the boy on the patio, at the 1300 block of Creekside Circle. Deputies found the boy unresponsive but breathing, according to the sheriff's office. There was a large bump on the boy's forehead, and a window screen in the area he was found.

Sheriff's deputies say it was likely the boy had been climbing on the sofa and looking out the window when the screen gave way and the child fell. The family recently moved into the house and was upstairs assembling furniture in the bedrooms, according to the sheriff's office. The boy's parents told police that the windows were open and the screens were in place before the fall.

"Windows open just five inches can create a hazard for young children," said Sheriff Jim Olson in a news release. "And window screens are designed to keep insects out but offer very little protection to keep kids in." Olson said local building officials can provide guidance to parents in installing safeguard products.

Police are continuing to investigate.

Last month, a 1-year-old boy fell from an 11-story apartment in Minneapolis and survived.
