Second body found in Mississipi during search for man seen jumping from Ford Bridge

During a search Sunday night for the body of a man who was seen jumping off the Ford Bridge into the Mississippi River that evening, search crews discovered another body, according to Ramsey County Sheriff's Office spokesman Randy Gustafson.

Gustafson said the body discovered by search crews is believed to be the missing person from Minneapolis who witnesses reported seeing jumping in the Mississippi earlier in the week. The person's identity has not been released, and it may take a few days, he added.

The body was discovered around 9 p.m., Gustafson said. The initial report of a person seen jumping from the Ford Bridge was around 6 p.m. Sunday night, he said.

"This is another one of those tragic situations where this appears to be probably an attempted suicide, jumping into the water," Gustafson said. "It didn't appear to be one of those foolish stunts that they were doing."

He said witnesses who saw the man jump from the Ford Bridge Sunday night reported that he possibly went over the Ford Dam because the water is high and running fast. The search was suspended when it started getting dark, and was scheduled to resume Monday morning, Gustafson said.

"We've got high water that's running really fast and it makes for hazardous conditions," Gustafson said. "...high water currents put first-responders at risk. We're doing our best to recover the body and stay safe."
