Crews rescue capsized boaters on Lake Minnetonka

A strong gust of wind capsized sailboats in Lake Minnetonka late Saturday morning, leaving sailors stranded on their boats and in the water.

"So far, everyone's been accounted for," Hennepin County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jennifer Johnson said, "but they're still responding."

Rescue workers from several agencies will continue to scour the bays of the lake, checking in on other boaters in the area. "We've got a lot of ground to cover," Johnson said.

Showers and thunderstorms have already dumped heavy rain on portions of southwest Minnesota, with more than an inch reported in Redwood Falls. Opening-day festivities at several stops along the new Green Line light rail route have been hampered by the wind and rain. MPR News meteorologist Craig Edwards says residents in and around the Twin Cities metro area should expect rain and wind throughout the weekend.

Edwards says severe thunderstorms and flash flooding are possible, most likely in southwest Minnesota, with the potential for large hail and gusty winds.
