Today's Morning Edition music features the song "Annie Had a Baby" by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters.
Sixty years ago today, it was No. 1 on Billboard magazine's number-one rhythm and blues hits — currently known as the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Hank Ballard and the Midnighters followed up with another chart topper titled "Work With Me Annie." Both songs were banned from being played on the radio by the FCC for including suggestive lyrics. The publicity created by the ban is credited with helping to make both songs hits. Hank Ballard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
