Springsteen expands repertoire to include picture book

Today's Morning Edition music features "Outlaw Pete" by Bruce Springsteen.

The song, which was on Springsteen's Working on a Dream album, has been reinvented into a children's book that may or may not be appropriate for children. It's the tale of an outlaw who begins robbing banks as the age of 6 months and later seeks redemption.

The book, which was released this week, is illustrated by cartoonist Frank Caruso and includes depictions of a knife fight and other violence.

"I'm not sure this is a children's book, though I believe children instinctively understand passion and tragedy," writes Springsteen on his website.

Both the book and song are based on a bedtime story Springteen's mom told him as a child.
