Driven by the lake effect, a ferocious storm dumped up to 60 inches of snow, killing at least five people and paralyzing an area used to huge snow totals.

The snowstorm is the first of the season and centered on the Buffalo area. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency for 10 counties, including Erie County.
