There have been two bits of big football news in recent days.

The University of Minnesota football team has been invited to play a New Year's Day bowl game for the first time since the team won the Rose Bowl in 1962. The Golden Gophers will face Missouri in the Citrus Bowl which will be held in Orlando, Florida.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings beat the New York Jets 30-24 in overtime Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium.

MPR's Phil Picardi spoke with Howard Sinker, a digital sports editor for The Star Tribune, about college football's intricate process of selecting teams for bowl games. Sinker also talked about the ongoing development of Vikings rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
