Minnesota is not among the 18 states receiving roughly $1 billion in federal, corporate and foundation grants to expand and improve early childhood education offerings. The recipients are being announced today in connection with a White House Summit on Early Education. 

Several Minnesotans will be in attendance at the summit, including Art Rolnick. He is a senior fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and a former vice president at the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis. 

Rolnick says there is mounting evidence that children who attend preschool are healthier, do better in later grades, and are more likely to graduate from high school. 

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Rolnick about early education research and how investments in preschool education pay off.

Children who attend preschool are healthier, do better in later grades, and are more likely to graduate from high school, says Art Rolnick of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

President Barack Obama will host the White House Summit on Early Education today.  At the event, he'll announce new block grants to states that will fund public preschool programs in high-need communities. Several people from Minnesota will be participating in the summit.  One of them is Art Rolnick. He is a senior fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and a former vice president at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.   MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Rolnick about research that makes the case that investing in early education pays off in the long-run.
