Police: Bus driver's medical emergency led to Duluth crash

A collision of two Duluth city buses that killed a passenger on Tuesday was likely triggered by a medical emergency suffered by one of the drivers, police said.

The crash in the 400 block of West Superior Street downtown killed Michael Joseph Mooney, 53, of Duluth. He was riding in the eastbound Duluth Transit Authority bus driven by Rodney Frank Polson, 58.

Preliminary indications show Polson "suffered from a medical emergency," Duluth police said in a statement Wednesday. Authorities will make a final determination once the investigation is complete.

About 15 to 20 passengers were on the two buses. Most were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
