This week's festival has us looking to the Mississippi River for the 68th annual Winona Steamboat Days festival.
While the days of steamboats flocking to Winona's shores are long gone, the yearly festivities continue as a celebration that links the town's past and present. Festival organizer Pam Simon-Salwey joined MPR's Tom Crann to chat about it.
The festival began on Wednesday, and will wrap up this Sunday. Tomorrow's festivities include the 5k walk and run at 9 a.m. and the Twin Cities River Rats Water Ski Show at 6 p.m. Sunday's schedule includes events such as The Factory BMX Bike Show at 8 p.m. and fireworks over the river at 10 p.m.
Here are a few more events happening this weekend:
• It's the first weekend of the three week long Manitou Days Festival in White Bear Lake. There may be more than 70 events to explore over the festival, but make sure to check out the decades-old Medallion Hunt tradition.
• Known to be slow but mighty with their hard shells, turtles have been on the run this week during the Perham Turtle Fest. The Turtle Fest Grand Parade takes place Friday at 6:30 p.m.
• Stop by the Gateway to the Northland Festival in Milaca, which wraps up tomorrow. The Fireman's Water Ball Tournament takes place at 7p.m. Saturday.
• If you're hankering for some potatoes, check out the 50th Annual Tater Daze Festival in Brooklyn Park. A Dress the Spud Potato Decorating contest will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow. Don't forget the ketchup.
