On building trust between the police and the community

This summer, 75 police chiefs from across the country gathered in Washington, D.C., to discuss how their departments can work to build trust in their communities in the wake of police-involved shootings and other tensions.

Each participating city was represented by both a police chief and by a member of the community, to bring new ideas and perspectives to the conversation. St. Paul Police Chief Tom Smith made the trip with Tyrone Terrill, chairperson of the African American Leadership Council.

Smith and Terrill are not always in agreement on policing strategy and policy, but the two have worked in partnership to reduce crime and forge bonds between the St. Paul police department and communities of color in the city.

They joined MPR News' Tom Weber to discuss their time in D.C., and how the past year has changed the St. Paul police department.

Smith said that he left D.C. feeling proud of the efforts his department has made and continue to make. Terrill agreed, saying "It just reinforced for me that we're doing some good things in St. Paul."
