Twelve photos show the stages of a total lunar eclipse in Gaiberg, Germany, Sunday night. Skygazers were treated to a rare astronomical event when a swollen "supermoon" and lunar eclipse combined for the first time in decades, showing Earth's satellite bathed in blood-red light.

Skygazers around the world stepped outside and looked upward Sunday night as the once-in-a-generation supermoon total eclipse took over the skies.
The next one won't happen until 2033.
