Three former University of Minnesota Duluth coaches filed a discrimination lawsuit against the university this week, saying they lost their jobs because they're female and gay.

The lawsuit has called attention to a national debate over gender equity for women coaches. Since the landmark Title IX law passed in 1972, the number of female coaches has plummeted.   

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with University of Minnesota professor Mary Jo Kane about the trend.

A recent lawsuit involving three former University of Minnesota Duluth coaches has called attention to a national debate over gender equity.

Three former University of Minnesota Duluth coaches are seeking back-pay and damages for alleged gender discrimination by the University.   They say they lost their jobs because they're female and gay.  The firings have called attention to a wider national debate over gender equity for women coaches.
