Halloween activity: Build a bat house

Little brown bats
Two little brown bats on the wall just inside the more rustic entrance Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at Mystery Cave in Forestville State Park. A fungus linked to white-nose syndrome, which can wipe out bat populations, has been found at the cave and Department of Natural Resources officials are working to prevent its spread.

Still looking for a good way to celebrate Halloween? Saturday at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington, check out a celebration of Chiroptera. You know them as bats.

Jill Utrup, a biologist with the U.S. fish and Wildlife Service, tells MPR News' Steven John there will be opportunities to learn about the fascinating critters (and why we shouldn't think of them as creepy), and participate in a bat house-building workshop. The house building is part of a nationwide project to construct 5,000 in one day.

The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn more at batweek.org.
