Officials who will run the new U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis are in Houston Tuesday, looking over the NFL stadium there with an eye toward the Super Bowl.
The NFL championship will be played in NRG Stadium in 2017, the year before the game moves to Minneapolis. The Metrodome hosted the Super Bowl in 1992, but fell out of favor with organizers of big events like the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four tournament as the building aged.
Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority Chairperson Michele Kelm-Helgen said they're looking to Houston to see how it keeps its stadium up to Super Bowl standards, which opened in 2002.
"We've got a 30-year lease with the Vikings, renewable for another 10 years. We want to keep this building vital and viable and operating," she said. "We're really looking out to 50 years. I think if we do it right, and we manage it correctly, it's possible to do."
Kelm-Helgen said her agency still hopes to host the College Football Playoff National Championship, despite losing a bid to host the game in 2020.
