President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland, will begin meeting with members of the Senate Thursday.
It's a normal part of the confirmation process, but in this case Republican senators say there will be no process.
In remarks Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reiterated his stance that confirmation hearings will not be held. He says the atmosphere is too politically charged during an election year and the next president should fill the seat.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Al Franken disagrees with that position. He serves on the Senate Judiciary committee. MPR's Phil Picardi spoke with him.
