St Paul police say they were called to a report of a lifeless body in an apartment building early Saturday morning.
They found the body of an adult male in the stairwell of the building in the 1500 block of St. Anthony Avenue, near the intersection of Interstate 94 and Snelling Avenue.
On Monday, the department identified the victim as Gracson Simmons, 42, of St. Paul and said the medical examiner's office determined he died of a gunshot wound.
The death has been ruled a homicide, although the department said over the weekend there is no known threat to public safety.
"Our investigators have been working to identify anyone with any knowledge of what happened and how this man died," police spokesperson Steve Linders said Sunday. "They've interviewed people who were in the area that may have seen something, that may have heard something," he said.
