Babies on board: Minnesota troopers make 2 roadside deliveries

Two troopers gave roadside assistance a whole new meaning this weekend, the Minnesota State Patrol said Monday.

Troopers helped deliver two healthy baby boys in less than 48 hours, one in the metro area and another in southwest Minnesota.

Here's what the State Patrol reported:

Bundle of joy No. 1 made his debut Saturday just after 1:30 p.m. on Highway 77 near Highway 62.

Trooper Jason Theel responded to a woman in labor. He helped make mom comfortable until paramedics arrived. Trooper Theel helped give mom some privacy as paramedics delivered the baby on the side of the freeway. Mom and baby were transported to the hospital and are doing well.

Bundle of joy No. 2 came about 30 hours later and 165 miles to the south near Worthington. Trooper James Orlando was on a traffic stop on I-90 when a vehicle pulled up behind him and a male jumped out saying he needed assistance with his wife who was about to give birth.

When Trooper Orlando got to the vehicle, he observed a female passenger who had just given birth. Trooper Orlando made sure the baby was breathing and kept mom and baby comfortable until the ambulance arrived. Mom and baby were transported to the local hospital and are reported to be doing well.
