But the three-word phrase has taken hold in the medical profession.
However, a new article in the Journal of the American Medical Association by Dr. Allan Goroll argues we get rid of the term.
Goroll suggests we abandon calling primary care clinicians "providers" and instead "address and relate to them as the highly trained professionals they are."
