Before traveling abroad, as more than 1.2 billion people did in 2015, it's important to consider your health.

A recent New England Journal of Medicine article says that between 22 and 64 percent of travelers abroad report some sort of illness, depending on where they go.

Most illnesses were mild, but some can be life-threatening — and many people don't seek medical consultation before their trip.

MPR News regular medical analyst Dr. Jon Hallberg joined All Things Considered host Tom Crann to discuss how and why to prepare for health challenges before international travel.

Use the audio player above to hear their conversation, and read an article Hallberg shares with his patients traveling abroad on The New York Times website.
