Today's Morning Edition music is from 60 years ago today when Elvis Presley performed on "The Ed Sullivan Show" for the first time.

Actor Charles Laughton was actually hosting the show that night because Sullivan was recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident. Elvis sent a get well message to Sullivan on the air by playing "Hound Dog," which was No. 1 on the charts at the time of that performance.

It was one of the rare times when both sides of a single topped the charts. On the flip side of "Hound Dog" was "Don't Be Cruel."
