Council approves beer, wine sales at St. Cloud State events

Fans will be able to buy beer or wine at men's hockey games at St. Cloud State this year.

On Monday the St. Cloud City Council approved selling wine and 3.2 beer at all SCSU athletic facilities and adjacent properties. WJON-AM reports the application was approved on a 5-2 vote.

Chartwells, the university's food and beverage provider, applied for the licenses.

Council member Carol Lewis opposed the application. Lewis thought the original plan was to sell beer and wine just at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

While the license allows sales at all SCSU athletic facilities and adjacent parking lots, athletic director Heather Weems says the focus this year will be on Husky men's hockey games.

SCSU tested selling beer and wine at two home hockey games last year.
