St. Paul police are investigating how the 7-year-old acquired the gun, a .38-caliber revolver, and the circumstances that led to it discharging, the department said.

"Today, we got lucky," the department said later in a social media posting reminding citizens to keep guns out of the hands of children.

"The student who brought the gun to school and his family are fully cooperating as we work to figure out who the gun belongs to, how the child got ahold of it and what could have been done to prevent the incident," police officials wrote.

News of the incident was first reported by St. Paul City Council Member Amy Brendmoen, who wrote about it in a morning posting to her North End neighborhood constituents.
