One man died and a woman was rescued after a building collapsed in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Friday.

The fire department tweeted shortly after 6 p.m. that it recovered the man's body after hours of sifting through the rubble. He was a construction worker, fire officials said.

The 22-year-old woman was "alive and well," according to Sioux Falls emergency manager Regan Smith, but she did have injuries to her leg and was taken to a hospital.

The collapse spilled a mound of debris into a street in downtown Sioux Falls. The cause is not yet clear.

The building has been vacant since September and was expected to reopen in the spring as a drug store.

Crews also rescued a dog from the rubble, according to the Argus Leader newspaper, and the animal seemed to be OK.

Cleanup will continue through the weekend, the fire department said.
