UnitedHealth Group takes a page from Obamacare play book

UnitedHealthcare is pitching a new product that comes right out of the Affordable Care Act

That's despite the Republicans' vow to repeal the law now that they've won control of Washington, and UnitedHealth's own decision to abandon most state health insurance marketplaces because of large financial losses.

The plan called "NexusA-C-O" is based on the "accountable care organization" envisioned in the health care law. ACOs are intended to improve health outcomes and reduce costs by promoting best practices and better coordinating care.

About 10 large national companies are already sold on the new plan and he expects rapid growth from there, said UnitedHealthcare Vice President Reed Bjergo.

"It really accomplishes our objective of working with providers to provide better quality of care at a lower cost," he said.

Bjergo said the ACO plan will cost employers less than traditional offerings.

"We're able to achieve that in working with providers to provide them with better data and put better tools and capabilities in their hand so they can support and overall better outcome for our consumers and out patients," Bjergo said.
