Wayzata High School students on Tuesday got to ask President Trump's nominee to the 8th Circuit United States Court of Appeals some questions.

The president announced David Stras's nomination to the circuit Monday. The Wayzata event was a previously arranged visit by the Minnesota Supreme Court to the school. Twice a year the court goes on what the justices call a field trip. It's an opportunity for students to see the judicial system in action.

Stras, who serves now on the Minnesota Supreme Court, fielded a few questions during a forum with students. Asked how he learns to control personal biases when making a ruling, he said everyone is a product of their experiences and a good judge can bring those experiences to bear on the questions before them.

"One way to control your biases is to understand that you have them, right?" he told students. "If you understand that you have them, and you know what they are, then you can put them aside when you're trying to decide cases."
