Governor and lawmakers plan to work through Sunday night on budget

Minnesota lawmakers are gearing up to work through Sunday night to complete writing and passing a new state budget.

Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka said as of late Sunday afternoon the Republican-led Legislature and DFL Governor Mark Dayton were on the cusp of a broad agreement.

That includes a compromise on Dayton's signature water quality law to require buffer strips between farmland and waterways. Republicans had been pushing for a delay to a November deadline for compliance.

Gazelka said there will be some flexibility that suits Dayton's concerns.

"There's no delay in the date. But we want to take a look at what happens in that first six months or so when people were not compliant and it's just because they were unaware of it," said Gazelka. "That's the area that I think we have agreement but I haven't seen any language yet."

The Legislature has until midnight Monday to finish its work or lawmakers would have to do it in a special session.
