Mpls. police arrest man in downtown shooting of bystander

Minneapolis police say they have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with Tuesday night's downtown shooting in which a bystander was struck in the stomach by a bullet.

MPR News is not naming the man because he has not been formally charged with a crime.

The victim, a 44-year-old, was still receiving treatment at Hennepin County Medical Center, the police said in a Friday afternoon statement posted to Facebook. He was in stable condition Wednesday.

The shooting — which happened at 6th Street and Hennepin Avenue around 7 p.m., with downtown still bustling — provoked a quick response from the police department. By Thursday night, there was a noticeably larger police presence than usual downtown.

Mayor Betsy Hodges said Thursday that the city was "doing everything we can" to curb violence downtown.

Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said the bolstered police presence would include bike-response officers, mounted patrol and beat cops.
