Emancipated slaves struggled after the Civil War. Many needed to find homes, jobs and the families they were separated from during slavery. The Government set up a whole agency to help these new citizens, but terror organizations like the Ku Klux Klan also took root.

The documentary "The Freed People" from the Humankind series features historians and the voices of former slaves themselves.
