1) The Naked City - Jules Dassin's Oscar-winning police procedural was shot on the streets of New York, documentary-style. It inspired a TV series that inspired a TV genre. Dick Wolf owes Dassin's estate residuals.
2) Oliver Twist - David Lean's noir-inspired version of the Dickens classic features Alec Guinness as Fagin.
3) The Fallen Idol - Graham Greene's first collaboration with Carol Reed is less heralded than the Third Man, but a classic that should be seen. Ralph Richardson plays a butler who entertains his employer's son with fictional tales of derring-do and then turns out to be more human than hero. The movie is seen through the naive eyes of his young admirer.
4) Bicycles Thieves aka The Bicycle Thief- If you haven't the Da Sica classic about fathers and sons, poverty, and morality in post-war Italy, just do it now.
