Minnesota Gophers football player accused of domestic assault

Minnesota Gophers senior running back Shannon Brooks was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic assault.

Minneapolis police Sgt. Darcy Horn said officers responded to the 600 block of 15th Avenue Southeast at about 1:30 a.m. on a report of a domestic abuse incident in progress. Officers took Brooks into custody, and he remained in the Hennepin County Jail as of early afternoon Sunday.

The incident happened within a block of the university's Athletes Village facility.

A source told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that Brooks, 22, was involved in a fight with a male roommate, who is not on the football team.

It's unclear whether Brooks has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

The Star Tribune reported that Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck, in an appearance on WCCO radio Sunday morning, said he was unable to comment on the situation at that time.

A message left with the university athletic department was not immediately returned.

Brooks is working his way back from a serious knee injury, and has not yet played this season. He traveled to Columbus for Saturday's game with Ohio State, but did not play in the Gophers' 30-14 defeat.

Brooks has rushed for more than 1,700 yards in his career with the Gophers, including 17 touchdowns.
