How do we treat opioid addiction?

Opioid overdoses claimed the lives of around 30,000 Americans in 2017. Although the crisis may be plateauing, the problem is far from over.

What is being done to treat opioid addiction? How could an opioid vaccine fit into current treatment plans? MPR News host Kerri Miller sat down with Joseph Lee, medical director at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Youth Continuum, and Professor Marco Pravetoni, a researcher working on developing a vaccine for opioids.

They talked about what makes opioid addiction such a difficult one to overcome, what treatment is available now, and how this vaccine could factor into future treatments.
