Drivers in Minneapolis will have to contend with another closure on Interstate 35W this weekend. The good news is that it's the final full-weekend closure the Minnesota Department of Transportation has planned for the project this year.
Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, the interstate will close in both directions between Interstate 94 and Minnesota Highway 62, the Crosstown. The closure is scheduled to last the entire weekend, with the freeway expected to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, ahead of the morning rush hour.
Crews will be conducting underground utility work along that stretch of freeway. The larger Downtown-to-Crosstown reconstruction project is set to be complete in 2021.
Also worth noting: Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Minnesota Highway 97 in Columbus in the north metro will be closed at Interstate 35 for bridge removal through 5 a.m. Monday.
While the I-35W closing is the biggest hassle coming this weekend, Twin Cities drivers should be vigilant watching for lane and ramp closures around the region. Check out MnDOT's full list online.
