The sheriff's office said the buggy was traveling north along the shoulder when it was struck from behind by a Ford F-150. The impact sent the buggy into the ditch.

The occupants of the buggy — 72-year-old Robert Keppers and 66-year-old Mary Keppers, both from Avon — were treated at the scene but died from their injuries.

The horse pulling the buggy also died.

The sheriff's office has identified the driver of the truck as Marc Lucas Knapp, a 23-year-old Avon man.

The crash remains under investigation.
