An 89-year-old man with Alzheimer's disease who went missing from his Brooklyn Park home early Saturday was found dead Sunday morning, police said.

Sylvester Smith apparently walked away from his home on the 6600 block of Cherokee Lane North early Saturday morning. In asking for the public's help on Saturday, police in the Twin Cities suburb said Smith was sociable but was not familiar with the neighborhood.

"Public safety officials along with volunteers conducted area searches yesterday and today," police said in a news release Sunday afternoon. "While searching this morning, Sylvester was found deceased."

The Hennepin County Crime Lab and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner are assisting with the investigation.

The search effort included Brooklyn Park police, the Minnesota State Patrol, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Brooklyn Park Fire Department, Minnesota Search and Rescue Dog Association, and several local residents.
