Otter Tail County in western Minnesota will host the 2020 Governor's Fishing Opener.

The opener will be held May 7-10, 2020, with Thumper Pond Resort in Ottertail serving as the event headquarters.

Explore Minnesota, the state's tourism promotion office, organizes the annual event along with a host committee. The 73rd annual Governor's Fishing Opener will be hosted by a committee of volunteers from Otter Tail County.

The announcement came Saturday as events from this year's Governor's Fishing Opener were wrapping up in Albert Lea. It was the first opener for Gov. Tim Walz, who took office earlier this year.

The Governor's Fishing Opener has been a Minnesota tradition since 1948 and serves as the kick-off celebration of the summer tourism season.

Next year's governor's opener will be the first one held in Otter Tail County since 1997, when Gov. Arne Carlson was on hand for the opener on Otter Tail Lake.
