Track worker dies in accident at western Wisconsin raceway

A track worker died Friday night at a raceway in western Wisconsin.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's Office reported that it happened at about 9 p.m. at Cedar Lake Speedway, near New Richmond.

After a crash during a school bus race, crews were attempting to move a damaged bus when it rolled onto the worker, who was identified by the sheriff's office as 62-year-old Edward Nicholson of River Falls, Wis.

Nicholson died at the scene.

The sheriff's office, county medical examiner's office and federal work safety officials are investigating. The sheriff's office asked for the public's help in locating video recordings of the incident; anyone with information can contact the sheriff's office.

Friday was the first night of racing of the season at the speedway, after the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down COVID-19 business restrictions in the state.
